What Is Shingles?
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus—the same virus that causes chickenpox. It typically presents as a painful rash, often accompanied by blisters. While anyone who’s had chickenpox can develop shingles, it’s more common in adults over 50 or those with weakened immune systems.
Common
Causes of Shingles
Shingles occurs when the dormant varicella-zoster virus reactivates in the body. This can happen due to:
- Weakened immunity from age or illness.
- Medical treatments like chemotherapy or steroids.
- Stress or fatigue weakening the immune system.
- Chronic conditions like diabetes or autoimmune disorders.
- Localised trauma to nerve tissues.
What Are the
Symptoms of Shingles?
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you may benefit from our professional advice:
- Pain, burning, or tingling in a specific area.
- Red rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters.
- Itching or sensitivity in the affected region.
- Fever, fatigue, or headache.
- Nerve pain that can persist even after the rash heals (postherpetic neuralgia).

Is shingles contagious?
Shingles is not directly contagious, but the varicella-zoster virus can spread to someone who hasn’t had chickenpox, potentially causing chickenpox rather than shingles.
How long does shingles last?
Shingles typically lasts 2–4 weeks. Pain or nerve sensitivity may persist for longer in some cases.
Who is eligible for the shingles vaccine?
The NHS offers a shingles vaccine to people aged 70–79. It’s the best way to prevent shingles and reduce complications
What are the early signs of shingles?
Early signs include tingling or burning sensations, pain in a specific area, and flu-like symptoms before the rash appears.
Can stress trigger shingles?
Yes, stress can weaken the immune system, increasing the risk of shingles.
