What You Need to Know
Progesterone is a natural hormone in the body that helps to prepare women for pregnancy. This includes thickening the lining of the womb to hold a potential child. Therefore, when the progesterone levels in the body fall, this tells the body to shed the lining, resulting in a period.
Norethisterone is a synthetic version of progesterone and thus, by taking it, you are keeping the progesterone levels high in the body, which thereby prevent the womb lining from being shed, and thus delays the period whilst being taken. Branded versions are ‘Utovlan’ and ‘Primolut’ N and may be supplied based on stock availability – please rest assured, these are all the same medicine (Norethisterone), just different names and manufacturers.
You simply take ONE tablet THREE times a day – THREE days BEFORE your period is due.
Continue taking it as prescribed, and your period will resume around 3 days after stopping the medication.
If you forget to take your dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. The exception is where the next dose is approaching, skip your forgotten dose and just take the next one as scheduled. Never double dose to compensate for a missed tablet.
Please note, the tablet works best when delaying your period. If you take the pill on the first day of your period, it likely will not stop your period. Also, it will not completely stop your period. Once you stop taking the medicine, your period should resume after 2-3 days.

In this scenario, you can consider taking two packs of the combined oral contraceptive pill back to back to delay your period. As this tablet does not prevent you from getting pregnant, you can still get pregnant whilst you have delayed your period. Therefore, if your period does not restart after 3 days of stopping the tablet, take a pregnancy test to check if you are pregnant.
