Where do I get Vitamin B12 From?
Vitamin B12 is generally found in foods of animal origin and is find in smaller levels in plant food – however, some plant foods are fortified with vitamin B12, including breakfast cereals and nutritional yeasts.
Vitamin B12 is available in oral supplements – the highest doses comes from those supplements which only contain vitamin B12 rather than medicines which combine it with other B-complex vitamins or other minerals and supplements (e.g. multi-vitamins).
Vitamin B12 in the injectable form offers the quickest and most effective treatment for replenishing depleted Vitamin B12 stores.
Things You Need to Know
Our MHRA approved injection contains a special ‘water soluble’ form of Vitamin B12 which can be injected into your blood. As it is an injection, the treatment will start working immediately to replenish your depleted B12 stores.
Our Vitamin B12 Service:
Step 1: Confirmation of Vitamin B12 Deficiency
First, you will need to get a test with your GP. If you are deficient in Vitamin B12, the GP can complete a form for you to bring to your Hollowood appointment.
Step 2: Doctor’s confirmation of treatment requirement
If you have already done this and just need treatment right away, you will need to bring a doctor’s letter dated within the last 3 months which clearly confirms the vitamin B12 deficiency diagnosis and the requirement for you to be started on Vitamin B12 injections from Hollowood Chemists. Alternatively, you can print off a copy of your NHS medical records confirming this diagnosis.
Step 3: Consultation and Treatment
Upon confirmation of vitamin B12 deficiency, our trained and experienced team of healthcare professionals will conduct a personalised medical examination and administer the Vitamin B12 on site and (normally) on the same day.
No GP waits or prescriptions are needed. We offer quick, easy and safe injection services that are operated through our in house health care professionals. We look to operate on a same day basis.
Vitamin B 12 is essential for the nerve and brain health, red blood cell and DNA production, metabolism and preventing anaemia. Through its role in metabolism, some have reported feeling improved vitality and energy levels upon treatment.
Furthermore, recent studies point to possible protection against macular degeneration and heart disease by lowering homocysteine levels.
The treatment is regarded as relatively safe, but like any medicine, has potential side effects:
- Diarrhoea
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Hot flush
- Nausea
- Skin reactions
- Urine discolouration
If you are allergic to cobalt – please notify your clinician (1-3% of the population have this allergy).
Please seek medical advice if you develop allergic skin reactions whilst on vitamin B12 therapy; urgent medical attention must be sought if symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as extensive or blistering rash, wheeze, difficulty breathing, or feeling faint, occur.
