What is a Sore Throat?
A sore throat is a common condition that causes irritation or pain in the throat, which may worsen when swallowing. It can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or even environmental factors such as dry air. Symptoms can vary from mild irritation to severe pain, with additional symptoms like fever, headache, and body aches.

- Allergies: Seasonal changes or irritants like smoke
- Dry Air: Especially during colder months
- Acid Reflux: Which can irritate the throat lining

When to Worry About Throat Problems?
If your sore throat persists for more than a week or is accompanied by symptoms such as severe pain, fever, or difficulty breathing, it’s important to seek further medical advice. Sore throats caused by conditions like strep throat or other infections may require prescription medications or tests to ensure proper treatment.
What causes a sore throat?
A sore throat can be caused by viral infections (like the flu or cold), bacterial infections (such as strep throat), allergies, dry air, or acid reflux.
What are the best remedies for a sore throat?
Common remedies include pain relievers, throat lozenges, warm saltwater gargles, and staying hydrated. Over-the-counter medications like paracetamol and ibuprofen can also help manage symptoms.
Can a sore throat be treated with antibiotics?
Antibiotics are only effective for bacterial infections, such as strep throat. If you suspect a bacterial infection, our pharmacists can help determine if you need antibiotics.
